File format standards
The native file format of AutoCAD is not open, and has been developed by Autodesk to be cross-platform, and vendor independent. In contrast to AutoCAD’s native file format, the native file format of AutoCAD LT is XML-based, and supports the exchange of both drawing and drawing information.
File formats in use
The native file format used by AutoCAD is not vendor specific. It can be used by AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, and other AutoCAD-based applications as well as in the web-based applications of other vendors.
An exchange format standard known as the DWG format (dynamic graphics interchange format) was developed in the 1990s and became widely used. Its advantage is that the rendering process of the native format and the DWG are identical, which can result in a better-looking output. A newer format based on the DWG standard is the DXF format (dxf interchange format). Both formats are essentially vendor independent and can be used by all CAD vendors and products.
When a DXF file is opened in AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT, the user can select the appearance of the DXF file, including its plot style (shape of lines and text) and color. The selection can be made in different ways, including:
The selected DXF plot style can be applied directly when saving the DXF file (when the DXF file is saved, its appearance is preserved even if it has a different plot style than the one selected at the time of saving).
